Communion

1 Corinthians 11:24
and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”

When you want to plan a special moment with someone, what do you do? What can you do to mark that event? Most often it is accompanied by a meal. It is a basic way to share, and be in a relaxed mood.

When there is important business at hand, the meal isn’t so important as the thing to be remembered.

The important item here isn’t so much the bread of the meal.

The main thing to do during a service of communion, or Eucarist, or Lord’s Supper, or what name you want to call it, is to remember. The tradition of this meal goes all the way back to Moses and the deliverance from Egypt. Jesus offers a new deliverance.

Remember the price that he paid so we can claim a place in a kingdom that we don’t deserve. Like the bread that was broken, and the wine that is poured out, so was his body broken, and his life poured out.

We are told to take and eat, to take and drink. The act of doing that is a symbol that as believers that Christ now lives within us, and we in him. We take his laws inside us, so his ways are written in our hearts. We make his ways our own.

Just stop to remember and consider how this simple act with bread and wine embodies what Jesus is all about. Compare what the bread means in the original passover to what it means with Jesus. The wine represents blood. In the orginal passover it was lambs blood that marked the Israel people for salvation from death. Jesus blood means the same, but much more. We are not only marked as his, but washed and presentable to be in his kingdom.

Always remember.
