The Agony of Defeat

April 11th, 2009

Psalm 22:14
I am poured out like water, And all My bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax; It has melted within Me.
This entire Psalm is so eerily like the crucifixion, and the things that Jesus must have thought and felt. The emotional drama, and trauma, can be felt and understood by anybody who is facing overwhelming anguish.

People who wrote the scriptures were real people. They didn't just walk around with placid expressions, hands folded, head bowed, eyes looking to heaven, and with halo precisely hovering over them. They faced real life battles.

Strong figures in the Bible history, Joshua, David, Job, Jesus, and more, all had moments where they felt like their insides just turned to water. They all had that Uh-oh moment when they came to that place to know that their enemies just grabbed the upperhand of the situation, and things aren't going there way any more.

Take time to read each verse in this Psalm. I'll bet you can relate to every single emotion here. The fear, the panic, the hopeless feeling. But in the last few verses, the writer doesn't make helpless appeals of vindication, or grieving over any mistreatment, or whether it is justified or not. He points to God. It is as if he is saying that no matter what the suffering he is going through, don't let his example take you away from seeking after God.

In life there is suffering. Tragedy that melts our insides in agony. Unfortunately, we may not be able to escape it, but with God, we can trust that we have something that nobody can take away from us. His work is more important, and will continue regardless.

All things in life come to an end. Even a time of suffering comes to pass. To get a sneak peek at what it's like after the terrible suffering of this life is done, and our faith in God is still in us, the agony is suddenly turned into the 6 verses that follow in the next Psalm. For those who are God's people, there is an end to suffering, and entry into a great calm and peace.
